About the Event
Join Sierra Club and partners Protect PT and Earthworks for a well-packed day learning about abandoned wells in Pennsylvania.
We’ll be venturing through some of Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs - Murrysville and Monroeville - discussing, viewing, and looking for methane leaks using a FLiR camera at abandoned wells located within public parks.
There will be two sessions of the day:
- In the morning: an education session at an ADA accessible pavilion with a short walking trail nearby
- In the early afternoon: a moderate (non ADA or stroller accessible) hike to an abandoned well site in an Allegheny County park (1.2 mile loop total)
Please note: transportation between parks will not be provided but an address for site location will be provided.
Come on this short, easy but fun and informative adventure to learn about the history of the oil industry, the abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells that litter Pennsylvania’s landscapes, and learn how you can take action to address these wells at the state and federal level.
All ages are welcome but please leave the dogs at home.
Please bring your own packed lunch (snacks, coffee and tea will be provided), a mask, weather-appropriate attire, sturdy shoes, and a positive attitude 😊
