On Thursday, July 14, 2016 the Penn Township Zoning Hearing Board denied the special exception request by Apex Energy for the White well site, where they were proposing to conduct unconventional shale gas drilling.
"We are pleased with the Board’s decision because during the hearing process Apex, for the third time, did not provide the Board the required information concerning impacts to health, the environment, and quality of life. Even in the face of a federal lawsuit challenging the validity of our ordinance, the Board did not succumb to intimidation but rather proceeded accordingly to uphold the rights of our community," said Gillian Graber, President of Protect PT.
Protect PT will continue working to ensure there are protections for the residents of Penn Township and the neighboring communities in order to make the community a safer, healthier place to live.
Level Green Applications Postponed
The Backus Pad (5 wells), located at 405 Sedona Lane, Trafford, PA 15085 will be the first of 4 well pad locations in Level Green to be presented for review at the Penn Township Zoning Hearing Board. Apex has postponed the hearings for this site until September 8, 2016.
Adjacent to this property are plans for a second pad, the Numis Pad site, with an additional 5 wells. These pads and other new infrastructure planned will be less than 1 mile from Level Green Elementary, and this particular location is only about one half mile from Penn Pals Child Care Center.
This is a major concern for our community because high volume hydraulic fracturing, a heavy industrial activity, is known to be a major source of air, water, and noise pollution. There is an added concern due to the proximity of these locations, as our children and the elderly are a more vulnerable segment of our population. Several current scientific studies show this industrial activity is a great concern to human health. In addition, the added burden of increased tri-axle truck traffic, heavy machinery, and intense lighting at these locations will negatively impact the quality of life in this community.
As a community organization, we are nothing without the support of community members like you. Please join us at the Zoning Hearing Board meeting on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 7:30pm (2001 Municipal Court Harrison City, PA) to oppose this well location. Your participation in this hearing process is imperative in order for us to remain the safe and quiet community we are accustom to.

Protect PT Member Air Monitoring Project
Protect PT has 10 air monitors specifically designated for our community donated by Natasha Khan from Public Source after her recent story on Drilling in Penn Township. Members of Protect PT have a special opportunity facilitated by Southwest PA Environmental Health Project to get air monitors in their homes in order to do baseline testing before well pad construction starts. This is an important project because this will allow community members to get an idea of air quality before drilling and if the air quality changes as a result of drilling, we will know. Second, there is very little pre-drill data out there and while Protect PT wants to try to stop drilling around residential areas, this could be an important component in showing how unconventional natural gas development changes our air quality if drilling can not be stopped.
Please note that signing up does not guarantee you will get a monitor as we have a limited number and we also want to ensure we have a monitors in close proximity to currently proposed wells and that monitoring locations are not too concentrated for the best possible results.
