"In the weeks since a Marcellus Shale gas drilling operation began taking place in Penn Township, Tracey and John Mason have had trouble sleeping. From their hillside home in a residential development no more than a half-mile from the well pad, they say the deep rumbling of the drilling rig is, at times, impossible to ignore. They add that the glow from the nearly 4-acre well pad resembles that of a high school football field on a Friday night, except with plumes of smoke.“It’s definitely not soothing,” said Ms. Mason, who serves as the vice president of local citizens group Protect PT, which had opposed what is the first unconventional drilling operation in the township since it started overhauling its zoning laws late last year. Unconventional wells involve an advanced drilling technique known as fracking. The loudest noises came early in the morning on July 5, when she said her husband was awakened around 4 a.m. by what he described in an email as a “low, rhythmic, pounding pulse” that made him feel as if he was “trying to sleep inside an engine block where the pistons constantly and consistently pound.”
